What to expect
After the initial interview you are invited to make yourself comfortable on the table and I begin with a hot towel treatment to your feet. This is followed by massaging your lower legs with organic essential oils in order to promote relaxation and circulation to the feet. The oils are especially chosen to enhance the effects of the Reflexology treatment
The aim is for you to feel relaxed during the treatment. It is very important that you communicate to me any possible discomfort or pain you may experience. As this usually indicates an imbalance or blockage in the corresponding part of the body. Every person is different, this means a certain technique or pressure that is ideal for one person may not be right for you. This is why our feedback is very important to me. If you suffer from a chronic or acute condition certain areas/zones in your feet are likely to be more sensitive.
Some people may experience a “healing crisis”. This is like a flushing out of toxins, which is sometimes necessary for the body to heal itself. The symptoms may be a feeling of lethargy, feeling odd or out of sorts. On occasion someone might feel very emotional. If a healing crisis does occur it usually happens within the first day or two after the treatment and is more likely to occur after a first treatment, in particular for people who never experienced any kind of energy healing before. Many people experience a feeling of deep relaxation during and after reflexology treatment. Regular sessions can greatly reduce symptoms in chronic conditions.
How does Reflexology work?
Reflexology is a natural, non-invasive form of healing therapy. Tactile stimulation is applied to the feet with varying degrees of pressure. This is achieved by using varies techniques. Specific reflex zones and trigger points correspond to specific parts of the body.
Reflexology works on the principle that each organ, structures and systems of the body correspond directly to certain reflex zones or points in the feet. Theses reflex points are connected to the organs and systems of the body through energy channels, meridians and zones. Sometimes energy flow is blocked or inhibited, which can lead to imbalances in the body. Reflexology aids to alleviate those energy imbalances and thus can be of great benefit to maintain or restore health.
Reflexology treatments can be a helpful addition to and enhance other healing modalities. Such as conventional treatment methods and other natural therapies. People at any age with any ailment can benefit from reflexology
The Microcosm Concept
Microcosm means “a world or organism in miniature” In other words, any part of an organism also reflects the whole including its qualities, functions and activities. In reflexology the feet are considered a microcosm of the body. Therefore the entire human body is reflected in the feet. Thus by using reflexology the entire body is treated and is stimulated in such a way to maximise its own healing capacity.
History of Reflexology
Reflexology can be traced back thousands of years. There is historical evidence of ancient peoples having practiced a form of reflexology. Such as primitive tribes in Africa and native Indian tribes in North America. It was their belief that the human spirit is connected to the universe though the feet, which are in contact with the earth.
The ancient Egyptians also used a form of therapeutic foot and hand manipulation. This is evident by the portrayal of such images in an ancient Egyptian tomb at Saqqara dating back around 2500 year B.C.
Many belief that reflexology has developed from the ancient system of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In TCM reflexology just like acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years. Apart from stimulating specific areas and zones, specific points (acu points) are also targeted.
